Ancient City Discovered Beneath Amazon Rainforest Using LIDAR Technology

A team of archaeologists using cutting-edge LIDAR technology has discovered the remains of a sprawling ancient city hidden beneath the dense canopy of the Amazon rainforest in Bolivia. The discovery challenges long-held assumptions about the Amazon being a "pristine wilderness" untouched by civilization before European contact.

The city, which researchers have named "Tierras Verdes," covers an area of approximately 200 square kilometers and features a complex network of roads, canals, plazas, and residential structures. Carbon dating of organic materials suggests the city was inhabited between 500 CE and 1400 CE, supporting a population estimated at 100,000 or more.

"This is not a small settlement — this is a civilization," said Dr. Ana Martinez, lead archaeologist on the project. "The scale and sophistication of the urban planning, the agricultural terraces, and the water management systems rival anything found in the Andes or Mesoamerica."
